Which Beautiful Pre-Raphaelite Painting Represents You?

"The Siren" by John William Waterhouse

siren

Mysterious and seductive you are intensely beautiful
like a siren, and flaunt it like the enchanting melody
of the same creature. You are confident in your abilities,
and you should be. You are a highly sensual person, and
you live for material objects and pleasures. You care not
for what lies in the depths of the dark pool, but only in
what the surface reflects back at you.

I Really Loved These Cards

The two cards I decorated in psp. I had fun playing with the fonts and colors! The bear was actually a book cover that I loved, and the other was a Christmas card from a friend.

The Legend Of The Poinsettias

The legend about the lovely red holiday plant, the poinsettia is a Christian legend from Mexico.

There, it is said, a little girl named Pepita wanted to place a gift to the Christ child at the altar of her church. Sadly, however, this poor youngster had nothing of value to offer.

Recognizing Pepita's problem, her older brother Pedro told her, "Don't be upset. It is not the value of a gift to our savior that counts. Any gift, presented with love, will mean as much to Him."

Accepting this wise counsel, Pepita set out to do her best. From the fields near her home she gathered a bouquet of weeds. She arranged the wildflowers as best she could and took them to the church. There she crept quietly down the aisle to the front of the nave and placed them carefully at the base of the creche.

Miraculously, by Christmas morning her "weeds" had turned to a brilliant red. They were, of course, poinsettias. Based on this legend, poinsettias are often referred to in Mexico as Flores de Noche Buena -- Flowers of the Holy Night.

Poinsettias do indeed grow wild in Mexico, where they can rise to a height of ten feet. In the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries the Aztecs used them for two purposes. The leaves served as a dye source and the plants' latex as a medicine to control tropical fevers. Only later in the seventeenth century did the flower take on religious significance. Then Franciscan priests began to display the bright red flower in nativity processions.

Despite its Mexican source, the plant has taken on a common name from the United States. President Andrew Jackson's ambassador to Mexico in the 1820s was Joel Roberts Poinsett. An amateur botanist who introduced the American elm to that country, Poinsett also searched widely for plants to bring back to the states. In 1828 he found a shrub with red bracts growing along a Mexican roadside. He took cuttings from the plant and returned them to his greenhouse in South Carolina. From there they were widely distributed.

Today, despite the fact that they are rarely sold other than at Christmastime, poinsettias are our top-selling shrub. Over 80 million are purchased each year.

The Aztecs had assigned one of their tongue-tying names to this plant, cuetlayochitl. A German botanist gave it its scientific name, Euphorbia pulcherrima, which carries the appropriate meaning, "very beautiful." Then finally, as the plant gained in popularity in the United States, horticulturalist William Prescott honored the ambassador who brought it here with its common name, poinsettia.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas

(or A Visit from St. Nicholas)
by Clement Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of sugar plums danced in their heads.
And Mama in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap.

When out on the roof there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
tore open the shutter, and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
gave the lustre of midday to objects below,
when, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles, his coursers they came,
and he whistled and shouted and called them by name:
"Now Dasher! Now Dancer!
Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid!
On, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch!
To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky
so up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
with the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
the prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head and was turning around,
down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes--how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
and filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

A Brief Note about the Author and the Poem
Clement Clarke Moore's famous poem, which he named "A Visit From St. Nicholas," was published for the first time on December 23, 1823 by a New York newspaper, the Sentinel. Since then, the poem has been reprinted, translated into innumerable languages and circulated throughout the world.

Clement Clarke Moore was born in 1779 to a well-known New York family. His father, Reverend Benjamin Moore, was president of (what is now) Columbia University and was the Episcopal Bishop of New York. Moore's father also participated in George Washington's first inauguration and gave last rites to Alexander Hamilton after Hamilton was mortally wounded in an 1804 duel with Aaron Burr. Moore himself was an author, a noted Hebrew scholar, spoke five languages, and was an early real-estate owner and developer in Manhattan.

Despite his accomplishments, Clement Clarke Moore is remembered only for "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," which legend says he wrote on Christmas Eve in 1822 during a sleigh ride home from Greenwich Village after buying a turkey for his family. Some say the inspiration for Moore's pot-bellied St. Nicholas was the chubby, bewhiskered Dutchman who drove Moore to Greenwich Village to buy his holiday turkey. Moore never copyrighted his poem, and only claimed as his own over a decade after it was first made public.

Moore read the poem to his wife and six children the night he wrote it, and supposedly thought no more about it. But a family friend heard about it and submitted the poem to the Sentinel, a newspaper in upstate New York, which published it anonymously the following Christmas. Moore's poem immediately caught the attention and imagination of the state, then the nation, and then the world. Finally, in 1844, he included it in a book of his poetry. Moore died in 1863 and is buried in Trinity Church Cemetery in lower Manhattan, New York.

Because of his "mere trifle," as he called it, 175 years ago Clement Clarke Moore almost single-handedly defined our now timeless image of Santa Claus.

Note: Some scholars now believe the poem was actually written by Major Henry Livingston, Jr. Whatever the authorship controversy ultimately determines, this work has become a Christmas favorite. "'Twas the Night Before Christmas."

Note: What is a "courser?" A swift horse; a charger.

The Christmas Poem

T'was the Night Before Christmas
He lived all alone,
In a One Bedroom House
Made of Plaster and Stone.

I had come down the Chimney
With Presents to Give,
And to see just who
In this Home did live.

I looked All About,
A strange Sign did I see,
No Tinsel. No Presents.
Not even a Tree.

No stocking by Mantle,
Just boots filled with sand.
On the wall hung a picture
Of far distant lands.

With Medals and Badges,
Awards of all Kinds
A sober thought
Came through my mind.

For This House was different
It was dark and dreary
I found the Home of a Soldier
Once I could see Clearly.

The Soldier Lay Sleeping
Silent, Alone
Curled up on the floor
Of this One Bedroom Home.

The face was so Gentle
The room in such Disorder
Not how I pictured
A United States Soldier.

Was This The Hero
Of Whom I Just Read?
Curled up on A Poncho
The floor for a bed?

I realized the Families
That I saw This Night,
Owed Their Lives to These Soldiers
Who were willing to fight.

Soon Round the World,
The Children Would Play,
And Grown-ups would Celebrate
A Bright Christmas Day.
They all enjoyed Freedom
Each month of the Year.
Because of the Soldiers
Like the one lying here.

I couldn't help wonder
How many lay alone,
On a cold Christmas Eve
In a land far from Home.

The very thought
Brought a tear to My eye,
I dropped to my knees,
and I started to Cry.

The Soldier awakened
And I heard A rough voice,
Santa don't cry,
This Life is my Choice.

I fight for Freedom,
I don't Ask for More,
My life is My God,
My Country, My Corps.

The Soldier rolled over,
And drifted to sleep,
I couldn't Control it,
I continued to weep.

I Kept watch for hours,
So silent and still.
And we both shivered
From The cold night's chill.

I didn't want to leave
On that cold, dark night,
This Guardian of Honor
So willing to fight.

Then the Soldier rolled over,
With a voice soft and pure,
Whispered "Carry on Santa,
It's Christmas Day, All is Secure."

One look at my watch,
And I knew he was right.
"Merry Christmas My Friend,
And To All A Good Night.”

Air Force. Army. Marines. Coast Guard. Navy. A Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan wrote this poem. The following is his request: "PLEASE, Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due our U.S. Servicemen and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities."

Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed. "I think his is more reasonable! If you agree, Please pass it on."
******************
I don't know why this poem gets to me no matter how long between reading it. Perhaps it is, that part of my family have been in the miltary. This year my brother gets to be home for Christmas and I am so glad. I am so proud of him. I wonder if he knows.

Healing...

I used to think of myself as needing to wear a glove for different situations. I had learned to function by wearing a different glove depending on what was going on around me. It was the only way I knew how to cope with change and anything that I thought was difficult to deal with. I have been doing a lot of work on myself for the past few months. I had limited my time on-line because of health issues. A deeper reason for doing this was the need to work on healing old wounds that had been long buried deep inside.

I think it’s terrible to remember something from the past and see it go through your mind like a movie clip. The images fresh and violent - - The violence committed against US. I used to be filled with rage at the injustice! I long to right the wrongs committed but it wouldn’t do any good; the DAMAGE was done long ago. I SURVIVED! I AM NOT DAMAGED!!

Now I have to heal. Part of the process is getting the facets to work together instead of fighting each other. The facets need to know what is going on in all of the aspects of my mind and body. I needed to learn to function more fluidly without memory loss or pain. I focused my energy in becoming more cohesive. I can see me from before and me now. I am healthier. I didn’t realize how much I had changed in the past few months. I have a couple of friends that I relate to on a regular basis our relationships are comfortable, safe. With them I am just myself. I slid back into our friendship as if I had not been gone for long. On the other hand I had some friends that I felt awkward with. It wasn’t until I had started interacting with others that I noticed how drastically I had changed.

I felt the loss of myself and some of my more distinctive traits that belonged to specific facets. I guess I have to realize that the hard work that went into healing was worth it. Talking to a few friends was difficult, I was lost. I didn’t know what was expected or who I was supposed to be in that moment. I Panicked. I found it very difficult to try and slide back into those relationships because of the way the facets interacted with each person, and how those facets dealt with individual friends.

Something I remember from my past was that there was a time in my life that being touched hurt so bad that I cringed at someone wanting to hug me. The pain was constant. I thought about telling someone, anyone but I couldn’t tell. My sister’s life had been threatened. I did what an older sibling would do, protect the younger one. I wish I could have saved US. I kept my silence and buried the secrets deep inside and learned to forget about it. I protected her and my love was the weapon he chose to use against me. Sometimes I wonder how I survived my childhood.

I remember I didn’t break. I bent but I didn’t break. At times I wonder and am amazed at my capacity to love. It has taken me years to get to this point in my life. I am proud of myself and the healing I have done. Trusting is hard to do, but now I know that most people won’t manipulate me by using my emotions against me. I love my sister. I can see the good times I had with my father, I can love him in that moment but as to the rest a part of me loathes him. I prefer not feeling anything toward him. That usually means that the wound is deep, and when its time to work on that I will cry and deal with the new me and heal even more.

I wonder if this really makes sense. It seems that I tend to ramble as I write when I have a break through. I guess that doesn’t matter as long as it makes sense to me and helps me get better.
